What do they use every day?
The safest handmade gift is a replacement for something dull they already reach for. A mug, a bowl, a lamp, a basket. The bar is not “would they buy this” but “would they rather have this one than the one they have”, and a hand-thrown mug clears that bar against a supermarket mug almost every time.
What would they never buy themselves?
The opposite tactic, and it works on people who are careful with money. Anything they would describe as an indulgence — a print for a wall they have left blank for four years, a candle they would never spend twenty dollars on — is a gift precisely because they have already decided not to buy it.
Is there a date on it?
Personalised work is a risk when it is decorative and a near-certainty when it marks something: a first address, a wedding date, the year a business started. The lettering is not the gift. The fact that somebody wrote it down is.
How much space do they have?
This is the question people skip, and it is the one that decides whether a gift is kept or quietly rehomed. Someone in a small flat does not want a large object, however good it is. Small, useful and excellent beats large and impressive in almost every home we ship to.
